Keeping on top of news

With a lot of the Oracle focused Blogdom away at OOW, and various pictures of people that should know better than be seen with empty glasses in hand it seems to be a minority of us stick-at-home types keeping up what's going one. But of course most of the Oracle news out this week is coming out of that large San Francisco Street Party that passes as a conference.

I could Blog that Oracle has been shopping again, this time for a telecoms OSS company, MetaSolv but I won't. More interesting is the multi-year partnership with NAVTEQ and the bundling of mapping data to allow 10g customers to build GIS mapping aware applications - and a quote from the press release

In today's global business environment, organizations are seeking to gain a competitive advantage by coupling geospatial data with enterprise data originating from applications such as supply chain, customer relationship management and planning and risk assessment. By including NAVTEQ's geographic data -- administrative boundaries for countries, states and cities, as well as major highways and roads -- with Oracle Database 10g, customers can expect their own pre-packaged map framework against which they can view and analyze all customer, sales and asset data. Including NAVTEQ's geographic data with the database makes it easier than ever for customers to leverage the capabilities of Oracle Spatial 10g, Oracle Locator, Oracle Application Server 10g MapViewer, and future Oracle products that may make use of geographic data. NAVTEQ plans to offer additional map and demographic products such as street networks, zip codes and industry specific data sets to Oracle users who will benefit from more detailed datasets.
Let's see how this pans out.
